The railing has a dark walnut and oak are covered with lacquer. For years I have accumulated many scratches. Is there an easy way to stop grinding for no reason?

Old English scratch cover of dark wood. Almost imperceptibly.
I would first try to linseed oil, but there is much friction on completing the task.
